John Stessel performing close-up magic for guests at a corporate event

Why me

A room full of executives is my favorite room.

I perform for people whose job is to notice things. Close-up and personal, in rooms where expectations are high and skepticism is higher, which is exactly where magic works best.

I have designed illusions for Netflix, performed on Good Morning America, and worked rooms for finance, tech, fashion, and hospitality clients. Whatever the format, I plan the night with your team first: run time, room shape, sound, and the one moment you want people to remember on Monday morning.

  • About 100 events a year

  • Rooms up to 850

  • Replies within 48 hours, usually 24

  • Live weekly at Moxy Chelsea

See it first

Come see it live before you book it.

Most entertainers ask you to trust a showreel. I'd rather you trust your own eyes. I perform every weekend at Moxy Chelsea, my show, An Evening of Impossible Things, and event planners are welcome to come watch before committing to anything. Buy a ticket, bring the boss, sit close enough to check my sleeves. If the room doesn't convince you, the invoice never has to exist.

Formats

Three ways I fit into your night.

Cocktail hour, transformed

Close-up magic performed at arm's length while your guests mingle. It breaks the ice faster than any seating chart, and it gives people something to talk about for the rest of the night. This is most of my hundred-odd nights a year: strangers at table six suddenly have something to talk about, and your event is the reason.

A stage show as the centerpiece

A tight stage mentalism set built for the room you are actually in. Forty five minutes that hold a ballroom, land the laughs, and end on a moment nobody in the audience can explain. The full set runs 45 minutes and holds a room of 850, my largest sales kickoff so far, as easily as it holds twelve. No volunteers humiliated. Executives included.

Moments built around you

I write custom pieces around the company, the product, or the person being celebrated. Your launch message, your milestone, your CEO's name in a place it has no business being. When Netflix brought me in for the Thursday Murder Club cast-and-crew dinner at Soho House, I built a mentalism murder mystery for twenty-five people. It ended with a custom reveal and a standing ovation led by Chris Columbus, Helen Mirren, and Pierce Brosnan. If your product can disappear, reappear, or read your CEO's mind, we should talk.

Brands and creators book me too

Pricing

What moves the price.

Every event gets a custom quote, but the quote isn't a mystery. Four things move the number: the date (December Saturdays go first and cost more), the format (strolling, stage show, or both), the audience size, and whether you want something designed just for you, a custom illusion takes real build time. What doesn't move the number: asking questions. Tell me the date, the room, and the headcount, and you'll have a straight answer within 48 hours, usually the same day.

Questions

Questions planners actually ask.

How much does a corporate event magician cost in NYC?
It depends on format, date, and audience size, see 'What moves the price' above. Strolling cocktail-hour magic sits at a different level than a full custom stage show with a designed illusion. Inquire with your date and headcount and I'll give you a real number, not a range designed to get you on the phone.
How far in advance should I book?
For most of the year, a few weeks' notice is plenty, if the date is open, I can move fast. December is different: my holiday calendar is usually full by November, and Saturdays go first. If you're reading this in October and your party is in December, stop reading and inquire.
What do you need from the venue?
For strolling magic: nothing. I work the room as it is. For the stage show: a performance area, decent light, and a sound system for bigger rooms. I've performed in boardrooms, ballrooms, and a members' club dining room mid-dinner. The room is rarely the problem.
Strolling magic or a stage show, which fits my event?
Cocktail hour or a networking event: strolling, because the magic happens inside the conversations you want your guests having anyway. A seated dinner or an awards night: the stage show as a centerpiece. Long evening: both, I stroll early, then close the night on stage.
What size events do you perform for?
From a private dinner for twenty-five to 850 people at a sales kickoff. The close-up work scales down; the stage show scales up.
Do you travel outside New York City?
Yes. I'm based in New York, but the work travels, this year that included a corporate event in Arizona. Travel costs are part of the quote, not a surprise after it.
Can you customize the performance around our company or product?
That's my favorite part of the job. I design illusions professionally, including for film and streaming, so 'can you make our new product appear out of nowhere' is a design brief, not a stretch. Custom pieces need lead time, so flag this early.
